Receiving the
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is a gift from God. Jesus said
in the Gospel of Luke 11:13, "If you then, though
you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will you Father in heaven
give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
Like any gift we must accept it. We accept him
by faith just like we do salvation. This also means
that I don't "work" for the baptism of the Holy
Spirit. This experience is not just for the
leadership, not just for those in ministry, it is
for each one. As Peter said in Acts 2:38, 29,
"Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the
name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your
sins. And you will receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your
children and for all who are far off-for all whom
the Lord our God will call."
Secondly Jesus points out the need to ask. If
you have the desire to be baptized in the Holy
Spirit then just ask. God is not going to
force the Holy Spirit on you. You need to
deliberately prepare yourself to ask, seek and
expect the Holy Spirit. Some receive the Holy Spirit
instantly without hesitation. Others wait on
the Lord much like the disciples did in the upper
room. Whatever your experience it begins with
the asking.
Finally you can expect to receive the baptism of the
Holy Spirit by faith. In most cases you will
have to pray audibly to receive the prayer language
that comes with the initial infilling with the Holy
Spirit. In Acts 2:4 the Bible says, "All of them
were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. The
believer does the speaking and the Holy Spirit does
the enabling.
Just remember not everyone receives the baptism
immediately. The disciples waited in the Upper Room
for 10 days. Waiting is not a cause for giving
up. The Holy Spirit is promised to every believer
and this means that you too may receive. |
